Pack Your Pony - The Mane Scoop - Easter Sunday, Embracing Australian Traditions: A Unique Camping Tradition

Issue 13: Easter Sunday - Embracing Australian Traditions: A Unique Camping Tradition

In a land as diverse and culturally rich as Australia, traditions weave through the fabric of society, connecting people from all walks of life. From Indigenous customs to immigrant practices, Australian traditions come in a multitude, each carrying its own significance and story. Yet, what happens when you don't necessarily come from a specific religion or culture? How do you forge traditions that are uniquely yours?

I'm Payton, a proud Aussie who, for the past 20 years, has celebrated Easter in a way that might seem unconventional to some: camping in the great outdoors. AKA South West Rocks.

My family tradition may not be rooted in a particular religion or cultural practice, but its deeply ingrained in the Australian spirit of adventure, camaraderie, and connection to nature.

For me, Easter isn't about attending church services or partaking in elaborate feasts. Instead, its about packing up the essentials - including your trusty pony - and heading out for a weekend of camping bliss. As the founder of Pack Your Pony, an Aussie-run accessories and clothing business, I know a thing or two about embracing the essence of Australian living.

So, what does this camping tradition entail? Picture this: a convoy of cars winding their way through rugged terrain, such as the drive from town to the gaol, Numbered and powered sites all lined up like ducks in a row. Tents are pitched, caravans are backed in and the scent of sizzling sausages fills the air. As day turns to night, the sky transforms into a canvas of twinkling stars, offering a breathtaking backdrop for storytelling and lots and lots of wine and laughter.

But it's not just about the camping experience itself; its about the competitive rounds of cards played under the makeshift dining areas. For me and my family, Easter camping trips are a time to reconnect with loved ones, swap stories from the past year, and create new memories we meet with two iconic families that have been apart of this narrative for as long as I can remember.

In a place as diverse as Australia, where traditions vary greatly from one household to the next, this camping tradition serves as a reminder that there's no one "right" way to celebrate. Instead, its about finding joy and meaning in the experiences that resonate with you personally. For me, Easter camping isn't just a tradition - its a way of life, a testament to the enduring spirit of adventure and exploration that defines our identity.

As we navigate the complexities of modern life, it's important to hold onto the "traditions" that bring us joy and fulfilment, even if they don't fit neatly into societal norms. Whether its glamping with your family, gathering for a barbecue with friends, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the natural beauty of Aus, Australian traditions come in all shapes and sizes.

So, as Easter approaches once again, take a page from my book and embrace the traditions that speak to your soul. Whether you're religious, cultural, or simply a lover of the great outdoors, theres no wrong way to celebrate in this vast and wondrous land we call home. And who knows? You might just find that your own unique traditions become cherished rituals for generations to come.

I sure know we have.
